8 Games to Remember the Ouya By

The Ouya, as we know it, is most likely dead, thanks to the confirmation of the acquisition of its assets by Razer last week. Heralded as the next big gaming revolution, and backed by one of the most successful Kickstarters in history, Ouya never seemed to capture the public’s interest. That didn’t mean good games never came through it’s ecosystem. Here are eight of the best.

8. Soul Fjord

The selling point of Soul Fjord is easily its absolutely nutty setting: a mashup between 13th century Norse myth and funky American 1970’s. Magnus Jones is part Beowulf, part Black Dynamite, and the silliness really helps sell the otherwise clunky and short sighted rhythm/action gameplay. I would love to see Airtight Games take another shot at this one, personally.

7. Final Fantasy III

A port of a pretty good remake isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the Ouya, and Final Fantasy III is no exception. I don’t believe that the Ouya would be the first console someone has played this entry in the legendary series on, though.

6. Skulls of the Shogun

Skulls is an excellent, turn-based strategy game that’s both highly accessible and challenging. A touch screen or mouse is the optimal way to play the game, but it still translates well enough to a controller, and the Ouya is no exception.

5. Pier Solar HD

Pier Solar’s HD remake hit many consoles towards the end of 2014, and is was one of Ouya’s big selling points. Pier Solar and the Great Architects stands next to games like Phantasy Star as one of the few great JRPGs on the Sega Genesis.

4. 100 Rogues

A fun little experiment piggybacking off of the explosion of popularity of the roguelike in the indie space, 100 Rogues does more right than wrong. It keeps you honest and active with a hunger meter that slowly shrinks every turn you spend, adding the need to stay nourished to the various other dangers of dungeon crawling.

3. The Walking Dead Season 1

Probably still the best Telltale Game on the market, Season 1 of the Walking Dead took the best concepts of the award-winning graphic novels and made them interactive. The story of Lee and Clementine is both inspiring and heartbreaking and should be experienced by everyone.

2. Sine Mora

This beautiful bullet hell is an amazing evolution of a very old genre. It innovates both visually and mechanically in ways that give it a modern appeal, like replacing a life bar with a timer that ticks away faster as you take damage. It should be no surprise that the game is a worthy shoot em up; it comes from Grasshopper Manufacture.

1. Towerfall

Ouya’s only real “killer app” would eventually move to consoles, but Towerfall is still the strongest game in their library, as far as games that made the Ouya it’s primary console are concerned. The level of chaos in a 4 player game of archers and arrows is the hectic stuff of great Friday night gaming traditions.
