posted a message on Automating page edits

    Hey there!

So far I don't think we've gotten a request about moving this proiect (The Aether II) -- Once we've gotten that, we can look at the best ways to move the content over to Gamepedia. We have some processes we've developed for it, so its unlikely that you'd have to manually copy it over. More likely we'd just ask for you to help check it over and perhaps re-format some stuff as needed to work with Gampedia's skin/extensions/etc.

You can tell the developers to either put in a request via http://gamepedia.com/wikiconnect or just email me directly at [email protected]

Hey there, from what I see I replied to all requests that came in recently using the e-mails that were submitted.

For wiki translations, we ask that users first translate the Main Page and a few other major pages. You can learn more on the Translation Guideline page of the Help Wiki

Translating these pages first helps us to be sure that you're committed to translating the wiki and then we can look into creating a separate domain for the project.

Thanks for the clarification anyway, I didn't see any image uploads or articles about it on the help wiki, and noone uploaded it to the wiki I was editing on - wasn't sure where it came from.

There was a Global Site Notice about it, we figured most people would see that. Free subscriptions are being provided to active editors, starting with folks with at least 5k wiki points.

Typically a 2-week ban on an IP is sufficient. If they do come back you extend it to 2-3 months. The problem with indefinite IP bans is that in todays world of dynamic addressing, they often end up preventing legit users down the road.

I am an Admin on the Runes of Magic wiki. I am seeing a LOT of what are obviously bot-created new user accounts in the last week or so. Isn't there a Captcha on new user creation? How are the bots getting past that? I have been blocking only the absolutely obvious bots, with names like ABCNameName, but I am seeing many in the form FirstLast, FirstLastNumber, and FirstNumber. SO far I have left those alone but we are getting 3-8 of those a day. Should we just start blocking them?

Generally we don't really block them until they start causing problems. A lot of times the new accounts are created but never used, or they're trying to use them and being blocked by the filters. ghhghgh is also correct in that we prefer folks not to give IP addresses indefinite bans. Accounts that are definitely spam can be blocked indefinitely though.

The pictures from this gallery http://imgur.com/a/yx7zV are from an iPhone and it still looks rather unusual that the gallery descriptions only take up half the page width.

I noticed the change to the section headers - perhaps the lower headers could be changed even more because at the moment the header types seem too similar (perhaps making the section 3/4 headers have no underline).

Ahh! I think I was misunderstanding what you meant by "gallery". So, let me take a new look at this now that I'm more clear on what you're referring to. I'll pass along the feedback about the headers as well.

posted a message on [BUGS] iOS Minecraft Wiki App

Section headers should be a little more distinct now. I'll bring up the image description stuff again. Part of the issue is probably that we're not really developing with tablets in mind right now.

We'll almost certainly come back to the search images to improve them, but a good chunk of the problem is just how Mediawiki handles things. Also that often the "best" images to use are actually being called in via templates and don't show up via the API the way other images do.

Its come to my attention that search is a little different on iOS versus Android, so we'll be looking more at that this week hopefully.

I'm in agreement about the loadpage template. I really don't like the way its being handled now on mobile (desktop and app) but its tough to deal with because of how the API and template work. I'll continue to push for it to be improved.

Regarding tables in general, the issue is with the width of tables. Many (or even most) tables would extend way off the side of the page and totally wreck the formatting of the page as well as be difficult to use well. By having them pop up, they're more readable, zoomable, etc. What we've done recently is add in a feature that checks if tables would fit in the page and, if so, render them as normal. In an ideal world we'd pull more information out of them for that "Click here" box, but tables are used in so many different ways that there's no standard way to pull good information from them.

posted a message on [BUGS] iOS Minecraft Wiki App

    - The text descriptions within the gallery for each picture should take up the width of the screen but only take around 3/4 of the width.

This is a cosmetic/design choice by our app team. I've discussed it with them and its partly to accommodate different screen sizes. I wasn't able to find an example of a text description that ran multiple lines, do you know of one off-hand I could look at?

    - Section headers are should display differently depending on whether they are section 2/3/4 headers

This is a styling problem that will be addressed, but as it does not affect functionality hasn't been high-priority.

    - There are spaces for images in the search but many display a greyed out image

The process of grabbing an image from a file for the search is automated and in some cases there is not an appropriately sized/shaped image to show. However, there should be a placeholder image in those cases. Can you provide a screenshot of a search with this issue?

    - The search is a bit strange in that searching many pages doesn't actually bring up the most relevant result (e.g. searching 1.8 brings up Alpha 1.0.17 first and the 1.8 page doesn't even show up - I think it's searching for 1 and 8 separately). It should show results starting with page title first, then page content afterwards (no help showing Banner when searching "Ch")

Search is an area we're still working to improve. The reason for what you're seeing is that iOS is supporting wildcard searching (e.g. typing in "cre" will immediately bring up Creeper without having to type the whole word). However, because of how this works, some searches like 1.8 don't work quite right. Its definitely something we're trying to perfect.

    - The sprite for the final block/item in the crafting recipes is off-centre.

This is a styling issue. I'll ask our front-end team to check it out.

    - Crafting recipes are not animated in places where they should be (e.g. cycling through wood planks etc)

As of now, having these animations in the app are not possible. These are not simple animated gifs, but rather use templates and other code to create these crafting animations. This is not supported in the traditional mobile browser mode either.

    - Pages which use the loadpage template do not show their content. For example, none of the crafting recipes on the Crafting page appear (there are many other pages affected too).

This is a technical limitation of mobile and the Mediawiki API. Its a "wishlist" feature for us, but as of now its not something we're able to do. As with animated crafting recipes, its also not supported by Mobile Frontend.

    - Images in the search show for some pages but they are often not the right images.

Given some specific examples we might be able to look at this, but what happens is that the search "looks" for the first image in the article that can be appropriately displayed in the results. Sometimes there's not one, or the first image is something only tangentially related, however it should always be an image from the page.

    - Pages with more complicated templates, such as Chunk format, do not display correctly

Parsing complicated templates through the API into the app is difficult. We're continuing to locate these problematic pages and investigate how they can be displayed better, but each one is a unique case and has to be approached differently. We acknowledge that every single page may not be perfect from the get go, but MCW is a very complicated and large site.

    - Search seems to be much slower than before

I'm not sure what would cause this, unless it was the addition of wildcard searching. I can mention it to the developers.

    - Number of crashes experienced especially through searches is much higher.

Please submit crash reports! Its especially helpful if you can find ways to reproduce these issues. Crash-causing issues are always our #1 priority.

     Hello!

It depends on what the blocking message is. It could be something on your end (e.g., if you're at work) or that your IP address was blocked after  being associated with some kind of malicious behavior (not necessarily you personally). Best thing to do is open a support ticket over at http://support.curse.com

Gamepedia's stance is that video-adding only is a no-no, I've talked with my supervisors after some of the users have been complaining to me about it, and general consensus was to removed them.

To clarify, our general policy is first and foremost to allow the community to decide about videos, but there was concern voiced from the community there about your additions since they were mostly your own videos, and often done while not logged in (as an IP address) which was perceived (rightly or wrongly) as sketchy. If you really believe your videos are a great addition to the wiki (e.g. there aren't other better videos, they actually add something to the information in the wiki, and you're contributing beyond the videos), then I'd recommend jumping into the on-wiki discussion about it and see what everyone else thinks.

posted a message on Simple Mathematics About Giveaways

I just want to reiterate that from the beginning our intention was to randomly select winners, as we feel that is always the most fair method.

During this time any content posted to the appropriate forum will count as an entry to the contest, with each entry earning you a better chance at the Grand Prize

One post = one ticket in the "fishbowl" from which the winners were picked. We then asked the development team to run a script that selected 75 unique people randomly from a table where each post got a line. This was always our intention and next time we'll be sure to put that in clearer language.

We've acknowledged that the results were not quite what we expected, but we've seen this in other contests elsewhere where people with thousands of entries are not selected and someone with just a few is. Its like the lottery, you can buy 1,000 tickets, but if 50 million were sold in total, your chances are not significantly higher than someone who only purchased a few.

In the end, we WANT to give our best posters something, hence the second contest where we have stated we will be selecting winners versus randomly drawing winners. We did our best, and we're sorry if anyone was disappointed by the contest. In the end, we appreciate everyone coming out to the forums and participating in conversations, games, polls, and all the other topics that are happening.

    Hello everyone!

I've gotten a couple messages about the outcome of the Steam Wallet Cash contest. Basically, we used an automated randomizer to select winners and in the end, many of the top slots ended up going to folks with fairly low post counts. Obviously the intent of the contest was to incentivize posting and (hopefully) reward our top contributors and that just didn't work out the way we'd planned.

Thus, we're going to have a second (smaller) round of Steam Wallet Giveaways operating on a similar principle, except we won't be publicizing it outside of the forums. There will also be a little more human involvement with selecting winners, not necessarily based directly on post count, but just to make sure that the majority of winners are from our pool of regular contributors.

    Prizes:

We're going to be doing twenty (20) Steam Wallet Codes for $20 each.

The contest will run from now until Sunday, November 23rd, so that we can get it squared away before Thanksgiving (for those of us in the US, anyways).

To discuss this contest, please visit the main forum thread at: http://www.gamepedia.com/forums/general/contests/1790-steam-cash-contest-take-two

    Winners:

    Darthlik1

For the record, we generated a list that had one entry for each post made on the forums and then ran a randomizer to grab 75 unique names.

Yeah, I've had atleast one post vanish even though I'm pretty sure I posted it. Maybe there's some automatic anti-spam system that is filtering out false positives?

This has definitely been a problem. I've been trying to un-mark as spam the OK posts. Our dev team assures me that this will help the filters learn to be less crazy about filtering.

    Quote from Lemoncream »

I remember Wikipedia used to have a syntax highlighting feature in the edit boxes a few years back, but for some reason they got rid of it. It was useful and easier on the eyes, and I haven't found any extensions or third party add-ons that worked when editing the Wikis here.

My understanding is that it's something that has to be installed with MediaWiki, so maybe y'all could consider that :3

We do have a Syntax Highlighter extension available, you can see it in use on Leaguepedia. I'm not sure how we'd feel about turning it on for other wikis though, since its such a major change and for now its either globally on or off though.

This will be fixed eventually, but right now its just a limitation of the platform.

    However, you can use Ctrl+Enter

Who's in charge of updating all the corresponding gamepedia pages?

You mean on the wikis themselves? That's mostly done by community members. We aim to provide a home for wiki communities and support them with tools and access to our teams, but most of our wikis are community-driven.

For everyone else, we occasionally send out packs like this to users who go above and beyond by contributing to various areas on Gamepedia such as active admins, folks who write guides, and those who contribute to the help wiki. :-)
