There are tons of fantastic new games out there where your goal is to rip through enemies and emerge victorious, but far fewer where you can chill out, explore, and appreciate the world around you, no matter how bleak it may be. That’s what you’ll get in FAR: Lone Sails, which features a deftly woven narrative surrounding a unique vessel that you must use to cross a massive dried ocean bed in a broken, dying world. An apocalypse has befallen civilization, and you’re on your way to seek out the remnants of those who came before you while seeking the answers to survival in a cold and solitary world.
With that said, it’s also a relaxing adventure that’s oddly beautiful and serene, despite the fact that you’re utterly alone on your journey. You’ll spend most of your time as the player character tinkering about your vessel. You can press buttons and flip switches that perform various functions to keep the vessel moving across the former body of water. It can be lonely at times, as it’s mostly a contemplative adventure throughout a dreary, gray world that reminds you at every turn that it’s just you and your ship out there.
But there’s also something peaceful and cathartic in keeping your vessel going as you explore uncharted lands, for once sans zombies, pirates, or other bad guys who want to take you out. Your only goal is to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape so you can keep moving forward, and continue to forge valiantly ahead. Of course, there are a plethora of upgrades you can utilize as well to improve your experience as you continue your search.
As you figure out how to operate and maintain your sails, obtain fuel from various sources throughout the world, and put out your first few fires, you’ll have a better idea of how gripping and mesmerizing FAR: Lone Sails can truly be. And while actually playing the game and crafting a relationship between you and your ship-boat-train hybrid is meaningful, taking in the moody visuals and gorgeous soundtrack is on another level entirely. It’s a lot like learning to become comfortable with yourself when it’s just you, your thoughts, and a moody sky with the rain falling down everywhere around you.
