Fortnite has become gaming's latest global phenomenon, generating huge interest and crossing over into the mainstream like few other games have managed to do. Our Fortnite and Fortnite esports wikis have been incredibly popular, thanks to the excellent work of editors like Fusilli_zaitsev, who is our June 2018 Editor of the Month. We spoke to him about Fortnite, wiki editing, and what he predicts will happen with the rifts/portals that opened in the Battle Royale mode after the recent rocket launch event.
Where are you from?
Southern New Jersey, USA
What's your day job?
I'm just coming off a really nice run in non-profit administration, and am working in fulfillment until I figure out what's next.
Outside of wiki editing, what are your hobbies?
Apart from playing video games, I like to read and build Gundam model kits. Just recently I've gotten into watchmaking.
How long have you been a gamer?
My brothers and I received a Sega Genesis as a Christmas gift when I was in the second grade, so for about 25 years.
What do you enjoy the most about Fortnite?
Crisp controls, wonderful art style, PvE and PvP, lots of loot, incredible community. It's just a great game to be playing right now.
Who is your favorite pro Fortnite player?
At the moment I'd have to say SypherPk of Luminosity. He's a great Fortnite player, and his streams are very informative because he often takes the time to discuss how he weighs his options and makes decisions in a given scenario. That being said, I was greatly enthused by Kinstaar's (from French team Solary) performance at the Fortnite Pro-Am and I can't wait to see more of his team in action.
What is your favorite Fortnite weapon?
In Battle Royale, Epic Games is successfully shifting the meta away from Shotguns and I'm thrilled because I love using SMG's in close-quarters fights. Right now the Suppressed SMG in particular is very strong, and I find using it against Pump Shotgun users to be most satisfying. In Save the World, the Tiger Assault Rifle is a weapon from the current Blockbuster event that I've been giving a lot of love due to its synergy with the Urban Assault Headhunter hero's headshot perks.
What do you think the portals/rifts are leading to in Fortnite?
Without a doubt, the rifts are absorbing parts of the map to a different time or place. My prediction is that the large crack in the sky will open sometime next week, and the entire map itself will be absorbed. At the other side will be a map that features the landmarks that have already been absorbed, but altered in some way by their travel through time and space. This will be the starting point for Season 5.
What do you enjoy most about wiki editing?
I really enjoy the architecture of it all. I'm constantly considering and re-considering how the wiki can be structured or articles written in such a manner that the users can see clear paths to wander down, either to get to the content that they seek or to view content in a progression that builds understanding.
What advice do you have for aspiring wiki editors?
From the very beginning, my wiki manager was really good at encouraging me to jump right in and fiddle with stuff. When I inevitably break something, I report it and learn why it broke and what I can do in the future to better achieve my goals. It's this freedom that I've felt — to break stuff and fix it — that's kept me editing. I'd advise aspiring editors to seek out their manager and fellow editors as a novice and learn the trade so-to-speak from those with more experience. There's also the added benefit of getting to know some really great people.
